LWVUS Climate Advocacy
Oct 12 “LWVUS Urged COP27 Heads of Delegations to Raise Climate Concerns. The coalition, led by Climate Action Network, (International) urged COP27 Heads of Delegation to show political leadership in this climate emergency. Further, the coalition urged governments to cooperate and act in solidarity for the people suffering from climate and interconnected crises to ensure that COP27 urgently raises ambition and provides scaled-up finance for implementation in line with equity and fair shares to ensure a climate-safe world for all. “
In addition, in Oct LWVUS was approved as an UN IPCC NGO observer, joining 120 other approved global NGO organizations. LWVUS applied in April with a number of other groups.
As in previous years, LWVUS will have observers attending COP27 in Egypt in Nov. The observer delegation will be led by LWVUS UN Climate Observer, who is also LWVOR Board VP and LWVOR NWEC rep, Robin Tokmakian.

Advanced Clean Cars II rulemaking
On October 19, DEQ held a public hearing for low- and zero-emission vehicle Draft Rules. Oregon, along with 16 other states, follows California's vehicle emission standards. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has adopted an extension of its Clean Car Standards requiring all new cars to be ZEV or hybrid by 2035. The League provided verbal and written testimony in support of rules adoption, but pointed out that mitigation might be necessary for some of the environmental Justice communities relying on pickup trucks and minivans.
